PATNA: While the death toll in Saran hooch tragedy soars above 35, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday said, “Jo Piyega, woh marega’ (Those who drink spurious liquor, will die.).
He also said the hooch-related deaths in Saran has brought forward a living example that those who would drink such spurious liquor would die. It is so simple.
“Last time, when people died due to the consumption of spurious liquor, someone said they should be compensated. I said, ‘Wah.’ Jo sharab piyega, woh marega hi. “If someone consumes spurious liquor, he will definitely die. These deaths are an example before us. … Such deaths must be mourned. People should visit the affected villages and convince people not to consume spurious liquor. You all have seen what a big campaign I led across the state in favour of the liquor ban,” Nitish said while responding to media queries in the state capital here, soon after paying floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his death anniversary.
Asked for his reaction on the hooch deaths in Saran district, Nitish said, “Ever since the enforcement of total prohibition in April 2016, the state government has taken several steps to educate people about the bad effects of liquor consumption. Even I led a social reforms campaign against liquor across the state. We have been warning people not to consume spurious liquor. Prohibition is enforced here (in Bihar). People must remember that they should not drink liquor. Still, some people take wrong steps.”
The CM also said that he has asked his officers to spare the poor who may be engaged in bootlegging and go after the people who are running the illicit liquor racket / business. “But the people engaged in manufacturing and trade of liquor must be caught,” he said.
Nitish also said people belonging to poor families should not be engaged.
in the trade of liquor. “They should be engaged in other works, and not in the manufacturing and trade of illicit liquor. I am ready to provide Rs 1 lakh per family to those who were earlier engaged in liquor-related works, to start other works. We will raise the amount if needed, but nobody should get involved in the liquor business,” he said.
On being asked that opposition BJP has alleged that there is no benefit from prohibition, Nitish, while defending his decision of prohibition, said majority of people in the state have given their consent in favour of the liquor ban. “The prohibition policy has benefitted several people and many people have given up drinking alcohol due to his measures. This is good. Several people have happily accepted this. But there are some wrongdoers. I have told officers to identify the actual wrongdoers and nab them,” he said.
