NEW DELHI: India held a firm grip in the opening Test and were inching closer to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series against Bangladesh. Chasing a mammoth 513, Bangladesh were tottering at 272/6 at stumps on Day 4 with Shakib Al Hasan (40) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (9) unbeaten at the crease at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Saturday.
Bangladesh have 4 wickets in hand and Shakib’s men still need 241 runs to win the match.
Spinner Axar Patel ended the day with three wickets to his tally, while Umesh Yadav, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Kuldeep Yadav, who bagged five wickets in the first innings, claimed one wicket apiece.
For Bangladesh, Zakir Hasan batted with dogged determination and slammed his maiden century before being dismissed by the experienced Ashwin.
Zakir, who had recently played a big role in a drawn ‘Test’ against India A, showed admirable defensive technique and smashed 12 fours and one maximum in his knock.
India’s chinaman bowler Kuldeep put India ahead by dismissing Litton Das as Bangladesh looked a tad unsettled having reached 176 for 3 at tea. Kuldeep enticed the profligate Litton with a flighted delivery. The batter couldn’t reach to the pitch of the delivery and an ugly scoop landed straight in the hands of Umesh Yadav at mid-on to provide India with an upper-hand after a wicket-less pre-lunch session.
Umesh also had a hand in drawing the first blood after a record opening stand of 124 between Zakir and Najmul Hossain Shanto (67).
Umesh finally got the breakthrough as Shanto’s 156-ball resilience came to an end. A fuller delivery outside the off-stump found the left-handed opener poking at it indecisively. Shanto could have still been lucky as the ball popped out of first slip fielder Virat Kohli‘s grasp but Rishabh Pant dived full stretch to his left and caught it on second attempt.
The two-match series is part of the ICC World Test Championship. India are fourth in the standings, having won six of their 12 matches. Bangladesh are in last place with eight defeats from 10 matches.
