NEW DELHI: The driver of the cab that knocked down former Intel India country head Avtar Saini in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai, killing him, has admitted to the police that he lost control of the vehicle because he dozed off.
Saini was hit by the cab at around 5.50am on the Palm Beach Road in Navi Mumbai’s Nerul area on Wednesday.
The cab, driven by Rishikesh Khade, hit Saini while he was cycling.Khade attempted to flee the scene with Saini’s bicycle’s frame wedged under the front wheels of the cab. Saini was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival. According to the police, Khade confessed during interrogation that he had fallen asleep due to driving all night, causing him to lose control of the cab and hit Saini’s bicycle.
Khade has been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. However, he has not been arrested as the maximum imprisonment for the charges against him is less than seven years. Avtar Saini, a resident of Mumbai’s Chembur area, was known for his contributions to the development of Intel microprocessors. The police are currently waiting for Saini’s relatives, who reside abroad, to claim his body for the final rites.
