Banking sector along with Unified Payments Interface or UPI appears to be suffering an outage across the country. Several users have reported that they are facing challenges while making payments via UPI via UPI-enabled apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM, etc.
UPI payments are not working
The issue has been persistent for quite some time now as we can see users reporting issues related to UPI payments from almost 3 to 4 hours ago on the microblogging platform — X.The reports cumulatively suggest that the entire UPI is going through an outage as users are unable to make payments, transfer money using UPI apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM and even Paytm.
Here are some posts from users:

Several Bank servers are down too
The outage seems to affect UPI transactions made using several banks as well. Users of HDFC Bank, Bank Of Baroda, Bank of Maharashtra, State Bank of India (SBI), Kotak Mahindra Bank, among others have reported facing server issues while making UPI payments.
Downdetector has also received reports on ongoing outage
Downdetector, the website that keeps track of issues and outages with all kinds of services, has also received users’ reports for UPI, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank on the ongoing outage. Users have reported that they are facing issues with “Fund Transfer” with their respective banks.
Banks and NCPI hasn’t acknowledged the outage
Despite several user reports, none of the banks and NPCI have acknowledged the ongoing outage and neither have any details on what has happened and why users are unable to make payments using UPI using their bank accounts.
We at TOI Tech also tried to make some payments using HDFC Bank account and we received an error stating “Money was not debited. Your Bank server is busy. You can try another payment method or try again in some time”.
