NEW DELHI: A man identified as Mohammed Abdulkareem (29) was taken into custody by local law enforcement in El Cajon, California on Thursday following a shooting at a dentist’s office that resulted in one fatality, local media reported.
Considered armed and dangerous, authorities had earlier issued a public appeal, urging anyone who sees Abdulkareem to promptly contact emergency services at 911.
Situated approximately 20 miles (30kms) outside of San Diego, El Cajon’s police department communicated the pursuit of the armed suspect involved in what they termed an ‘active shooter event’.
Following the attack, the two injured individuals were transported to a hospital and are reported to be in stable condition, according to information from local TV station KUSI.
The nature of the relationship between the shooter and the victims remains unclear.
With more guns than people in the US, approximately one-third of adults in the country own a firearm. Despite polls indicating that a majority of Americans theoretically support stricter gun regulations, the influential firearms lobby and an engaged voter base advocating for robust gun rights have consistently hindered legislative action on gun control in Congress.
Against this backdrop, the United States Supreme Court, currently divided, recently deliberated on the legality of “bump stocks” during hearings. These devices can enable rapid fire from firearms that are otherwise semi-automatic.
The case is a consequence of the tragic mass shooting in October 2017, the deadliest in US history, where a gunman targeted a crowd attending an outdoor music concert in Las Vegas, resulting in 58 fatalities and approximately 500 injuries.
