Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has reignited the political debate following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks ahead of the elections in Madhya Pradesh. Prime Minister Modi on June 27 said that India cannot run on two laws and that Uniform Civil Code was part of the Constitution.Supporting PM Modi’s remarks, Minister of State for External Affairs & Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan said that the UCC will not curtail the rights of any section of the society on the basis of religion. “I don’t understand why any person from Muslim or Christian community should feel perturbed about the statement of PM Modi. It is already there in the Constitution. The courts have already given their view on this,” V Muraleedharan told ANI. “UCC will not curtail the rights of any section of the society on the basis of religion. I would appeal the communities to understand the law, constitution and also cooperate with the government to implement the Constitution and ensure that there is equality,” he added.
